Chemical Changes in Daily Life make you Surprise

While physical changes can often be reversed, there generally cannot be chemical changes of matter except through various chemical reactions, when a chemical change occurs there is also a change in the energy of the system, the chemical change giving heat is called an exothermic reaction and the one that absorbs heat is called an endothermic reaction.

Chemical changes of wood

Iron is a grayish-white metal and conducts electricity, it is attracted to a magnet and reacts with dilute acids to produce hydrogen, sulfur is a non-metal and is yellow in color, it dissolves in carbon disulfide(CS2).

When powdered iron and sulfur are heated together, a completely new substance is formed, iron sulfide, the properties of iron sulfide are completely different from those of iron and sulfur.

It is black in color, it is not attracted to a magnet and does not allow electric current to pass through it, it reacts with dilute acids from hydrogen sulfide gas, in short, iron sulfide does not exhibit the properties of iron or sulfur .

Types of chemical changes

Although there are thousands of different chemical reactions, many of them have similar characteristics, these similarities allow us to begin to classify the different chemical changes into broad types.

The combination

It occurs when two or more substances combine in a chemical reaction to form one or more different substances, the combined reactions can cause the corrosion of metals, such as iron with oxygen from the air.

Combustion forces, like a burning candle, are likewise examples of chemical change through the mixture of wax and oxygen in a reaction that creates heat, light, and carbon dioxide.

The Decomposition

It is the opposite of the combination, it happens when a single substance breaks down into two or more different substances, this type of chemical change is evident when the fruit decomposes over time, the decomposition can also happen when the substances attract energy, such as decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen with electricity.

Double displacement

In single displacement reactions, only one chemical species is displaced, in double displacement reactions or metathesis reactions, two species (usually ions) are displaced, most of the time, reactions of this type occur in a solution, and an insoluble solid (precipitation reactions) or water (neutralization reactions) will form.

How to recognize the Chemical Changes of Matter?

The Levels of Organization of Matter can be identified as follows:

Temperature change: This means that there is a change in energy in a chemical reaction, it happens frequently that it is a change that can be measured with temperature.

Light: Some chemical reactions produce light.

Bubbles: Some chemical changes produce gases that can be seen as bubbles in a liquid solution.

Precipitation: Some chemical reactions produce solid particles that can remain suspended in solution or can precipitate.

Color change: A color change is a good indicator that a chemical reaction has occurred, reactions involving transition metals are especially prone to producing color.

Odor Change: The reaction may release a volatile chemical that produces a characteristic odor.

Irreversible: Chemical changes are often difficult or impossible to reverse.

Change in composition: When combustion occurs, for example, ash can be obtained, when the products rot, their appearance is visible changes.

Examples of Chemical Changes

Here are some examples in which the chemical changes of matter can be evidenced:

Burning Wood in a Fireplace

When the firewood is ignited and begins to smolder gently, it eventually turns to ash, however as it burns, heat is produced, there is light, and smoke is released through the chimney. The chemical reaction of heat, light and smoke are characteristic of a chemical reaction that results in a new matter, the ashes cannot return to the wood.

Ripe and rotten bananas

Various bananas are on the kitchen counter, sometimes they are green when purchased but eventually start to turn yellow and eventually ripen to the point of rotting, the chemical composition of bananas has changed over time resulting in new molecules.

Paper burning

Any form of combustion is a chemical reaction, from the burning of paper to the explosion produced by dynamite.

The combustion process, which means the chemical reaction, always involves the composition of oxygen with the fuel, for example, the paper that has carbon particles mixed with other atoms constituting a carbon chain chemical compound.

Oxidation

When a nail or other metal begins to rust on the outside, it is due to the chemical reaction between the metal and moisture in the air, the nail can be cleaned of rust, but the rust itself cannot be converted back into the metal original.

Leaves in autumn

During the spring and summer, the leaves on the trees are a vibrant green and give off oxygen as the plants make their own food through photosynthesis, however, when autumn arrives, the chemical reaction causes the leaves to turn brown and eventually fall off the tree. Brown leaves cannot turn green again.

Food digestion

Food must be broken down into a form that our cells can use. When we eat, our bodies physically break the food down into small pieces. Our bodies also chemically break down those small pieces of food into small organic molecules, this process is called digestion.
